Chapter 1 of THE CHAOS CHRONICLES

A wind whispered through the trees, rustling the leaves. The day was new and the sun had just risen when through the shadows of the trees you could see a score of young men, if not old boys, were playing. If you could here them this was what they said. "Coward, you would never make a soldier for Lord Arsic," taunted a big boy. " You would make a good stableboy," said another with equal disrespect. You see, these boys had just finished a game and some of the village bullies were standing around a boy taunting him. These 'bullies' were not to bright, in fact they were quite stupid because as they were soon to find out this boy was tough prey. If you would step back and look the boy you could see a glimmer of controlled rage(the most dangerous kind of rage) in his grey eyes. The boy whom they were taunting was named Stee and was quite tall, had long red hair, broad shoulders, and was ew in the village. "Leave him alone Carsin, what has he done to you?" shouted a tall boy named Kalim. "Existing, of course. Isn't that right Jaled?" laughed Carsin. "Of course. He isn't worth a............"said Jaled who was cut off with a punch from Stee, his face was contorted in rage and pretty soon they were rolling ont the ground punching and kicking each other.

"Get off you slobbering idiots." said a voice as they were pulled apart. Both boys turned around to see who had spoken this and saw that it was Darnim the 'official' unofficial leader of the boys of the town of Shilac, the town they were in. "You fools! Who knows what the elders would do to us if any of you were hurt on naming day," shouted Darnim. Naming day was a sacred ceremony of coming of age that was celbrated each year in Shilac. It was not done in many of the big cities, but this ceremony was done mostly in isolated mountain villages like Shilac. What they did each year at the ceremony is the following: at the start of the ceremony they would bring a magician(the elders of the village hired magicians to do this) to place his hands on each boy who has comed of age(a boy who was 16 years old) and tell the future of the boy. The boys would stand in a line and where the traditional hooded cloak of the ceremony. Once every boy's future was told the girls of the village would perform a dance (for the ceremony was also a start for boys to find a wife) and the boys would join in. After that there would be a great feast and at the end everyone would go home. Anyways this is how the story goes. "And you Kalim, I thought you knew better than to mix in somebody else's fight," sputtered Darnim, his face red from the shouting. "Shut up, Darnim. I don't care what you say, but this idiot here," said Kalim as he was pointing to Carsin. "Deserves punishment. Just because a new person said he wanted to be a fighter for Lord Arsic (the ruler of Shilac) doesn't mean he can pick on him." "No, I'm fine. I'm used to this back in Avalon and well I thought it would be different here, but I was wrong." said Stee as he was dusting himself off. "You lived in Avalon, the capital of the west." said a thin boy who was standing nearby. "Aye, I lived in Avalon all right. I learned how to survive there." said Stee bitterly. "We must go it is nearly time for the cermony." said Darnim. The boys all agreed as they started the long hike back to the top of the mountain where the village was.

Stee was clawing nervously at his cloak's classp. "You will be fine," said Kalim in reassuring tones. Stee was thinking on how it would be like to feel the failure and disgrace of a bad future. "I'm just thinking on what will happen if....." Stee had not known that he was putting word to his thought until that moment. He quickly broke off and said to Kalim "Me and you have been fast friends. Thanks for taking me in and being nice." said Stee. "Nah," replied Kalim with a twinkle in his eye,"I just thought that you might help me gain Asyr's attentions." "He is here," was heard being whispered along the line of boys. The boys were arrayed in a winding line around two bonfires and could see the road. "Do you think that he is a real magician unlike the one last year."said the boy who was behind them."Oh hi! Are you the new boy. Me and Kalim go way back....and so does his little afection for Asyr." said the boy. "Be quiet, Jorish.I don't want Carsin to here I would never here the end of it." said Kalim. All of a sudden a man stood up on the platform that was in front of the two bonfires and with a thunderous voice he began his speach,"Today you have gathered here to know what lies in store for you. You will learn your destinies and will be taken up in different crafts." Murmurs ran through the audience of boys about the addition to the ceremony, but they were all silenced as he continued, "Yes, I know about the change this year, but it does not marr the glory of the past, the present, and the future meeting. I introduce today our fortuneteller Armis the Elvon, high sorcerer of the elves." More murmurs ran through the audience of boys. This has never happened before, an elf,a powerful one at that! "Quiet, quiet young humans come up and I will tell you your futures, by the stars in the sky, the moon in the air, and the ancient forests," said the elf.

1 hour later.......

"It is almost time," said Stee. There was no one people in front of him in the line. He could hear the elf say, "You will folow the way of your father and will die by natural means, next one please?" His stomach groaning, Stee went up to the stage and sat down on the chair beside the elf. Stee closed his eyes and waited for his future, but it didn't come. Instead he heard the elf say,"I want this one." "All right you may take him with you, but remember the deal." sadi the elder. The elf said,"Human, we elves do not forget our promises like some of your race so I will continue." Then Kalim stepped on the stage and waited, but instead of his future the elf said,"I want this one also."
